Education in Sustainability – The Net Zero Home illustrated in the photo to the left and below are examples of the type of sustainable architecture that Simkus Development, SEEDS will be developing together throughout Boulder County. The SEEDS COLLABORATIVE will continue to further "Best Practices" and even "Proof of Concepts" to serve multiple purposes in educating college students to further energy efficiency and use of advanced technologies. Student education includes gaining hands on experience in the areas of sustainability, energy efficiency, renewable energy, agriculture, community and economic development. The buildings constructed, renewable energy site characteristics for renewable energy infrastructure and data analytics will serve as a platform for students at the University of Colorado Masters in the Environment, Undergraduate School of Architecture, the Boulder Valley School District Life Long Learning program. The students will be instructed on the importance of gathering metrics on energy consumption and renewable energy generation before and after adaptive re-use. The students will be instructed on how the data gathered will serve to create a pathway in securing financing for implementing energy efficiency and renewable energy measures to be used in Net Zero Energy and district energy design. Common project scope will include the incorporation of photovoltaics, ground source loop fields, energy recovery ventilation, LED lighting, water conserving fixtures, xeric landscaping, onsite energy storage, all electric appliances, and optimization of energy management.

presented by Boulder County Commissioners to projects designed and managed by Simkus and the Boulder County Housing Authority team for Excellence in Public Service
How does SEEDS work:
SEEDS approaches every partnership with first identifying the target objectives and deliverables of the collaborative team. This is done by coordinated meetings hosted by SEEDS where the common goals and roles of each member is defined. The objective is simple, to develop the most cost effective, carbon neutral and green built approach in buildings that can be achieved while offering apprenticeship training. For example, achieving zero net energy buildings will utilize the strengths of the collaborative members of the SEEDS team while placing emphasis on the projects affordability, durability, quality and comfort.
SEEDS strives to break away from the traditional siloed approach in developing housing, commercial buildings, and sustainable technologies by educating a post secondary work force in key industries that will accelerate change. SEEDS applies government and private foundation resources to address societal and global issues. However SEEDS accomplishes this by breaking away from one dimensional approaches in community development by creating public, private, and academic institutional parternships to optimize the use of resources while delivering solutions to society's greatest needs.
SEEDS brings key stakeholders together that have common purpose. A common purpose to accelerate transformational change as it relates to social equity, economic development and sustainability. SEEDS projects build mementum for industry change in industries that include building science, renewable energy, education, energy efficiency, transportation and resource conservation. Every SEEDS demonstration project serves as a template for creating a demonstration and ideally "best practice" through carefully planned metrics and deliverables so that the empirical data can be shared with others seeking to leverage the successes of the SEEDS Collaborative.
