Growning SEEDS of Change for Future Generations
Large Scale Use of Ground Source Energy for multiple family PUD
The Paridigm pilot project informed the architectural design, energy efficiency and renewable energy decisions for the above 180 unit PUD where the entire development is supplied with geothermal (GSHP) energy running through the historic Excelsior Coal Mine delivering 58 degrees of thermal energy 365 days a year! Josephine Commons is one of the largest residential geothermal loop fields used in afffordable housing in the world thanks to innovative planning and forward thinking collaboration that included the Governors Energy Office, NREL, and the Department of Energy.

Josephine Commons Planned Unit Development conceptual planning began July 2006 and completed construction December 2014. This collaborative effort began in 2006 with the Colorado School of Mines Department of Geophysics identifying subsurface conditions using magnetic resonance and field gravity testing to determine the risk of mine subsidence and opportunities for geothermal (ground source) energy.
